Enough With The 2.0 Already

By Jeff Hilimire on Monday, March 26th, 2007

The world has gone insane with the 2.0 talk. I’d love to blame Microsoft for introducing us to this way of thinking, but now that they’ve moved to naming their software after the year it comes out is supposed to come out I have a hard time blaming them too much. It’s great that they name their new products things like Office 2007, but what they fail to mention to us is that it won’t run smoothly until we’re using hardware from 2010. Thanks again Microsoft.

But I digress. The real culprit is O’Reilly Media, who in 2004 so cleverly coined the phrase “Web 2.0” in order to explain the new phenomena of the web being more than a one-way communication tool and started being a more collaborative, user-generated one.

And I could have lived with that being the only 2.0ism out there, but it’s creeping into everything! Fast Company’s recent issue has an article entitled, “Business 3.0“. People are even talking about RSS 2.0. I just yesterday saw this graffiti on a bridge in Atlanta:

Apparently Faster Mustache is a biking website (who knew) and although I can’t find it on their site, I suppose they feel like they’ve progressed to the 2.0 level of bicycle racing, whatever that means.

Unfortunately I don’t see this going away anytime soon. So I’ll leave you with this - recently the CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, was quoted as saying, “Ebay and Google both benefit from the adoption of Web 2.0, or Web 3.0.” Yikes.

lol…great post! Best post griping about 2.0 I have ever read. However, if 2.0 helps people adapt to the idea of change and embrace change or even rally around it…I say let it be.

What is funny is that 2.0 thinking was around way before 2.0 existed.

I seem to remember everyone during the dot-com days wanting a “chat room” (lose term for anything like an actual chat room or a forum). Post dot-com, everyone wanted to build a “community”.

2.0 isn’t new, it just has a label now.

    RE: fastermustache

Who knew it was a biking website? Have you checked out the first sentence of http://fastermustache.org/about ?

As for the 2.0, It’s our second year birthday party which granted, we don’t make explicitly obvious but thats the reason for the name. And that has little to do with the 2.0 of bike racing or something, unless you count the tricycle race thats going on inside during the party :)

    See you on the streets!

That was so “2.0″ to bash Social Media on a blog… With 3.0 expected to focus more on social tools and their integration into business processes, I wonder if some of us are not being “3.0″ already. : p

Where did I put that Google Doc? Maybe it is on our Wiki…

Just to be clear, I’m not bashing the concept of Web 2.0, just the naming of it of course. The web should be a place where people can contribute and collaborate. Just like Donovan, I think its been a much more gradual transition (and continues to be).

Also, ckdake, nice job on the bridge marketing, it worked on me! And I’m a part-time biking enthusiast myself - biked a century in the fall of last year. You guys seem like you have a great thing going.

Come to the party, join the site, ride your bike with us.

The Spunlogic Book of Records says this is the blog post with the most replies.

Well done, Jeff! You win a shiny nickel!

Cool also that you actually got someone from the content of your post to reply. That could be a first as well (those never-ending posts about me don’t count - I’ll reply to anything).

I am looking forward to seeing Jeff Hilimire 2.0 next time I see you. Better get to work…
